Seriously Sri Lanka | Ceylon Tea Trails | Cape Weligama | Tri
The Luxe Diary has teamed up with Hudsons Travel to source some of the most luxurious Sri Lankan getaways and curate your Luxe Travel List for Sri Lanka this autumn – in time to inspire you for the UAE National Day long weekend.
Ceylon Tea Trails | Hatton
Starting with a true luxury original, Ceylon Tea Trails is a stunning natural and luxury resort set in the tea plantations. Situated at an altitude of 1250 metres near Hatton in central Sri Lanka, in 2005, the Fernando family behind Dilmah tea, the country’s only entirely homegrown and managed tea brand, launched Tea Trails, Sri Lanka’s first tea bungalow resort which has set the precedent for luxury hotel accommodation in Sri Lanka.
Comprising five very distinctive colonial style bungalows, each named after past tea planter occupants, Tea Trails allows its guests insight into the working estates of one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated tea brands.
The resort is now also the first tea resort in the country to offer night-time safari-style trails across over 2,000 acres of tea country. After a tea-inspired dinner, guests can join the resort’s leading naturalist, Anuradha Ediriweera, and his team on a night-time trail across the valley. Trails will lead guests from bungalow to bungalow where they can spot different types of amphibians, sleeping lizards, snakes, wild boar and jungle cats.
Upon arrival back at their bungalow, guests will be met by a refreshing cup of Sri Lanka’s finest Dilmah tea and a rewarding bath run by their butler in residence.
Prices start from $648 (2,380AED) per room per night, on an all-inclusive basis, based on two sharing including a tour of the conservation station. Night safaris start from $30 per person.
Cape Weligama | Galle
Down on Sri Lanka’s Southern Coast just south of Galle Fort, Tea Trails’ luxurious sister resort Cape Weligama offers the perfect complement of ‘tea and sea’. Perched on a spectacular cliff-top site with 270 degree panoramas of the Indian Ocean, Cape Weligama is an elegant 39-key resort overlooking the beautiful bay of Weligama, famed for whale-watching.
Come December, guests can enjoy the Cape Weligama signature whale-watching experience on board the resort’s brand new comfortable catamaran, and spot rare bluewhales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins, as well as try their hand at snorkeling and stand-up paddle boarding. Other additions include the newly launched Cape Weligama Spa and Kids Zone with an inspiring programme of family-focused activities.
Rates from $442 (1,623 AED) per night on a B&B basis, including: accommodation on a double-occupancy basis, daily breakfast, plus laundry, mini bar, afternoon tea, all taxes and service charges plus one activity per day. Rates for the whale watching experience start from around US$160 per person with guests having the option to hire the boat exclusively should they wish.
Tri | Koggala Lake
Just inland from the coast, set on the tranquil shores of Koggala Lake, Sri Lanka’s first sustainable design hotel, Tri, will be celebrating its first anniversary this December. Founded by British photographer, Rob Drummond, who was determined to bring something wholly different to Sri Lanka, Drummond worked closely with Raefer Wallis, of Shanghai’s A00 Architects, to design a hotel that honors nature, enriches its surroundings, and prioritises sustainable practice.
To celebrate its First Anniversary, Tri have created a Special UAE Offer of a Complimentary Night Stay over the UAE National Day Weekend (stay 3 nights only pay for 2). Tri will also extend its extensive wellness offering next year, with a brand new 10-day Yoga Retreat in February 2017 run by co-owner and founder of Quantum Yoga, Lara Drummond. The retreat will assess guests’ doshas to find their Ayurvedic nature, in order to tailor their yoga practice, food and holistic treatments to ensure optimal health and positive state of mind. Guests will reset their body-mind connection through daily yoga practice in Tri’s treetop yoga shala, alongside delicious and nourishing Ayuvedic cuisine, located in Sri Lanka’s first truly sustainable contemporary design hotel. 2017 will also see the launch of Tri’s very own trio of dosha-balancing massage oils to continue the pampering long after guests return home.
Nightly rates from $270 (992 AED) for a water tower room and $378 (1,388AED) for a Lake Suite on a half board basis, including all taxes and service charge. Tri have also launched a Special Offer for UAE National Day Weekend: Stay 3 Nights for the price of 2 in a Lake Suite from 28 November to 5 December – a saving of 1,388AED. Reservations must state “UAE offer”.
