The Luxury Of A Peaceful Christmas
Christmas isn’t quite the same this year. With the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine, a great big celebration doesn’t really feel like the right thing to do – but, while our thoughts may be elsewhere, we also have our own families to take care of and children for whom the magic of Christmas is something incredibly special. So how do we reconcile the two? By filling the festive season with a little more meaning – and by always reminding ourselves and our loved ones that we should always be grateful for everything we have, remember the people who are not so lucky and understand that peace, freedom, health and family are all luxuries not to be taken for granted.
Giving the important people in your life a memory to cherish forever by gifting an experience. Our faves? A sunrise hot air balloon flight over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve with Balloon Adventures Dubai (complete with a vintage Land Rover drive across the dunes) or a night under the stars with Sand Sherpa, the only company permitted to camp in pristine desert – and by camp we mean in the very best trailers with rooftop tents and all the facilities you could possibly need.
For the foodie, the person who has it all, parents, grandparents, friend – anyone really – we LOVE the Melia Flowers Mishkah Hamper (AED 350), which includes premium Palestinian Olive Oil, Sumac and Olives plus a Tea Collection, all beautifully boxed up with fresh blooms. Or go for the Olive Plant and Mishkah Olive Oil combo (AED 509) as a representation of peace and friendship.
The Gift Of Sleep
How about giving someone the gift of sleep? Yes really – if you know someone who struggles to nod off then welcome to The Sleep Chapter, handcrafted knitted weighted blankets (from AED 245), each one crafted by skilled artisans who pour their heart and soul into their work. Not only does sleeping under one of their blankets mimic being hugged but also is proven to reduce anxiety – something we all need a little less of these days.
Jewellery That Heals
Not only does it look good but the ‘grateful’ bracelet (AED 275 at Ounass) from holistic health coach Tori Boughey’s label T Balance is created to bring a positive vibe to your day. Handmade from turquoise crystals, which are said to carry purifying and strengthening energy, this pretty piece is one of many different types available, each with their own special powers. You’ll want them all.
For Capturing Memories
Move away from reaching for the phone (and never looking at the photos on it again) and buy into the Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 (AED 379 at Virgin Megastore), the ideal camera for capturing those special moments . Its credit-card size prints make for delightful keepsakes to cherish forever – perfect for slotting into a wallet and keeping loved ones close by always.
Be kind…to yourself
Put the guilt aside and treat yourself. Whether it’s through a little pampering (check out Snob Salon’s December offers in Arjan or Jumeirah which include a Moroccan Hammam Full Body Massage for only AED 320 and a Gel Manicure, Gel Pedicure and In-Chair Massage for AED 300 plus lots more) or exercise (perfect for releasing endorphins) – our fave barre studio Barre Effect will be giving one randomly selected class attendee a gift each day until December 23. All you need to do is attend!

And if you’re hosting Christmas then remember you don’t have to slave over a hot stove. Leave the food to the professionals by ordering a festive feast to be delivered and spend your day binging Christmas movies and hanging out with the people you love. Our faves? Jones The Grocer festive roast turkey with all the sides (AED 885 for 8-10 people) and The Duck Hook par-cooked boneless turkey breast with signature trimmings (AED 825 for 4 people).
Wishing you all a very happy, peaceful Christmas
