We know, January can be a bit ‘meh’. With the festive season all packed up and normal routines back in full swing, getting motivated and inspired to even leave the house can be a challenge (sofa and PJ’s, we love you). Well here’s the thing – there are some pretty cool ways to spend your time this month so why not try something new? Because embracing opportunity and living life (when so many can’t) is what 2024 is all about. We’ve found 6 of the coolest things to do in Dubai this month to help get you started…
Breakfast (or lunch and dinner) at the Caia Bamboo pop-up
What’s better than a peaceful meal al fresco – particularly when it’s surrounded beautiful ghaf trees in the heart of the desert, beside the tranquil waters of Flamingo Lake? Caia Bamboo is a pop-up eatery serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner during the winter months in the Al Marmomm Secret Garden (part of the Al Marmoom Desert and home to Al Qudra Lakes). Its beautiful boho vibe (think floaty canopies and wooden tables scattered across the sand) is perfect for sitting and chilling. Add some really good food to the mix (breakfast is served at weekends and lunch and dinner every day) and you’ve got a winning combo. Eating under the desert sky and a canopy of fairylights while watching flamingos in the sunset? Yes please.
Learn, Eat & Get Creative At Quoz Arts Fest
A definite January highlight, the Quoz Arts Fest has the already super cool Al-Serkal Avenue buzzing with live music performances, immersive art installations, delicious food and really fun workshops for the whole family. Taking place from 8am – 11.30pm on 27 and 28 January, you can buy a pass for the whole weekend and drop in and out as you wish. From a pop-up DJ school to film screenings, markets and workouts courtesy of Crank and Shimis Yoga – there really is something for everyone here. And then there’s the food – we’re talking over 50 of the region’s most amazing chefs and restaurants including 21 Grams’Balkan soul food, Rare’s Japanese and Latin American-inspired delights and the legendary Akhou Manoushe plus loads more. See you there.
Watch A Movie With Meaning At Reel Palestine
An annual film festival that brings Palestinian stories in the form of independent and alternative artistic cinema, Reel Palestine allows the Palestinian community to share their unique stories and heritage. Taking place at the independent Cinema Akil in Al Serkal Avenue between 26 January and 4 February, this year’s festival serves as a tribute to the people of Palestine and includes 12 feature films, a short film programme, industry talks and workshops and a Souk with over 50 small businesses. You can also check the website for the ‘home edition’ and information on Palestinian films to watch from the comfort of your own home.
Workout At at Drift Beach For Barre Effect’s Third Birthday Event
Our fave barre studio will be three years old this month – and to celebrate, the team are hosting a 45 minute poolside class at Drift Beach for men and women, followed by a gorgeous breakfast and some time to chill. If you haven’t been to Drift Beach OR tried Barre Effect yet then read about why you should in our reviews below. A combo of the two = a morning well spent. Tickets are AED 220 per person and available to all levels, whether you’re a novice or a pro, via the BarreEffect website or app.
Take the kids to La Perle (for free)
The region’s first permanent show has been running for a while now – but this January, kids go free with every adult ticket booked. With daring stunts, a unique ‘aqua theatre’ and incredible aerial acrobatics, this multi-sensory show is so much fun to watch (the motorcycle tricks are literally unbelievable). For boys, for girls, for grown-ups – we guarantee you’ll have a really, really fun night out (and save a few dirhams in the process)
Spend a day at Twiggy Family
Chic, relaxed and family-friendly don’t always go together – but at Twiggy Family you can expect it all. Sibling to the uber lovely Twiggy by La Cantine and located within the luxurious confines of Park Hyatt Dubai (one of our fave Dubai hotels), Twiggy Family is a beach club that brings the spirit of the Riviera to the creek. With a dazzling 100 metre lagoon, waterfront restaurant serving up Mediterranean delights, plenty of plush shaded sunbeds and a splash pad for the littlest guests, you can lounge, eat and enjoy a chilled drink or two while the kids play to their hearts content without any disapproving looks. Dedicated play areas and a never-ending array of indoor and outdoor kids’ club activities, entertainment, classes and games will keep them super busy and you very relaxed.
psst… Twiggy Family also offers a school afternoon break which includes pool access, smoothie making and other fun stuff – perfect for those days when you just need to get away from it all (if only for a couple of hours)
who says January has to be boring?
